Our company feels an inherent need to help our clients design and build the home they’ve always wanted, at a price they can afford,” says Texas A.I.B.D. designer Charles Roccaforte. Roccaforte’s philosophy on design comes from over 40 years of experience in the residential field. “The method is simple: help the clients develop a budget and guide them throughout the design and construction process to make certain they stay within that budget,” Roccaforte says. “Clients are encouraged to actively participate in every aspect of the project. After several meetings, the floor plan and exterior design begin to emerge. Our clients are asked to bring photographs, pictures from magazines, and even drawings on scraps of paper, to the initial meetings so that we can assess their wants and needs. We even suggest they make a ‘Wish List’ and try to incorporate those features in the design process.”
Interviewing designers and builders and actually touring the homes they’ve completed is a very important phase of the client’s selection process. The homeowners should be assured that they have selected competent professionals, as well as individuals with whom they are comfortable. The client has to feel confident that the decisions they have made concerning the design and construction of their home will be heard, and that everyone involved in the project will work towards a common goal.
After moving to a rural hill country area in central Texas, Roccaforte took some of the native materials – rock and cedar – and blended them with high ceilings, steep roofs, dormer windows, and wraparound porches to create a style that was appropriate for the country setting. “Most people have moved to this area because of the beautiful scenery,” Roccaforte says. “We like to walk the clients’ property with them and help them select the perfect site for their home. At the same time we can situate the house to take advantage of the prevailing winds, the angle of the sun, and work to keep the site as natural as possible. Most clients would like their home to be an extension of the land that surrounds it – not something that would clash with the natural setting.”
Charles Roccaforte has extensive and varied experience in the design industry. He began his career in the Houston area, specializing in designing commercial interiors and working as a graphic artist. In 1972, Roccaforte ventured out on his own and added residential designing to his portfolio. By 1976, he decided to leave the “big city” life and moved his family to Wimberley, Texas. Now, years later, Roccaforte has become a well-respected and active member of the community. He is a member of both A.I.B.D. and T.I.B.D., and has won numerous National Commercial Design Awards.
